Cat Habits & Behaviour

Redirect, don't scold - practical fixes for everyday cat problems.

"Training" a cat is a different game

Cats don't learn commands the way dogs do. Most cat problems are natural behaviours happening in inconvenient places - so the fix is not punishment but redirection: give the behaviour a better outlet. Scolding, hitting or spraying water leaves the behaviour intact and only teaches the cat to distrust you.

Scratching: move it, don't fight it

Litter box problems always have a cause

CheckGuideline
NumberOne more box than cats; even a single cat does better with two
LocationQuiet, away from food, never a dead end
LitterFine mineral litter is the safest bet; abrupt brand changes cause misses Find litter
CleanlinessScoop daily; full change and wash monthly
Box size1.5x body length; upsizing alone often fixes the problem Find large boxes
Sudden frequent visits, straining without producing urine, or blood in urine are signs of cystitis or urinary stones - a medical emergency in male cats. Go to the vet, not the training manual.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cat learn the word 'no'?

You can interrupt an action, but punishment rarely erases a behaviour. Redirection to an approved outlet works better and keeps the cat's trust.

My cat keeps scratching the sofa.

Cover the scratched spot so it no longer works, and stand a hemp-rope vertical scratcher immediately beside it. 'Blocked plus adjacent alternative' has the best success rate.

My cat suddenly stopped using the litter box.

Rule out cystitis and urinary stones with a vet first. If healthy, check what changed: box count, litter brand, cleanliness or location.

Night zoomies keep me awake.

Try 10-15 minutes of intense wand play right before bed followed by a meal. Hunt, eat, groom, sleep - riding the natural cycle usually buys a quiet night.

Does a water spray bottle work?

Not recommended. Cats rarely connect the spray to the behaviour; they mostly learn to avoid you. Changing the environment is more effective.
